Tragic news emerges from a tourist paradise. According to foreign media, a British tourist has died in Thailand after consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms.
Reports from "The Mirror" and local Thai sources indicate that a 25-year-old man from the United Kingdom was vacationing in Thailand. He purchased the mushrooms on December 20 this year at a shop in Chiang Mai, a city popular among tourists in the northern part of the country.
Tragedy in Thailand
The young man consumed the mushrooms upon returning to his hotel, leading to a severe reaction. About 40 minutes later, foam began to come out of his mouth, and he started trembling intensely. He died shortly afterward.
A spokesperson for the British Foreign Ministry expressed condolences to the deceased's family, stating they are receiving support, and that authorities are in constant contact with local services.
Investigation ongoing
Local authorities are conducting an investigation into the young tourist's death. On December 22 this year, a raid was carried out on the shop where the deceased and his partner bought the mushrooms. The sellers of the illegal mushrooms, identified by the woman, have already been arrested. Four people worked at that location. Furthermore, seven kilograms (15 pounds) of narcotics were found in the shop’s warehouse. The khaosodenglish.com portal reported that each package of the prohibited mushrooms was sold for 500 baht ($14).
Major General Worapong Khamluea stated that the suspects will continue to be interrogated to identify the supplier of the drugs. Possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms is illegal, and their effects are similar to LSD and can be very dangerous and irreversible. As demonstrated in the tragic example of the Briton, they can even be fatal.
