Brazil's Lula recovering in ICU after successful brain surgery
The President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, underwent surgery to remove a subdural hematoma following an intracranial hemorrhage, Reuters reported, citing a government statement.
The 79-year-old president's hemorrhage was discovered Monday evening after an MRI scan. Lula da Silva had previously complained of a headache.
He was transported to the Sirio Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo, where he underwent a craniotomy. This procedure involved removing a piece of skull bone to access the brain and eliminate the hematoma.
Lula da Silva previously suffered a head injury
The surgery became necessary after an accident that occurred at the president's home at the end of October. Lula da Silva suffered a head injury that required stitches. A minor brain hemorrhage was also identified.
The accident forced the president to cancel his trip to the BRICS summit in Kazan.
The operation went smoothly without complications. The government reported that Lula da Silva is feeling well and is in the intensive care unit. His health condition is being monitored closely.
