Brazilian deportees shackled and sweltering on chaotic U.S. flights
Citizens of Brazil deported from the U.S. complain about travel conditions. According to eyewitness accounts, during the flight, their hands and feet were shackled, and the plane lacked air conditioning.
Since Donald Trump returned to power in the U.S., the deportation of undocumented immigrants has accelerated. A group of 88 citizens was returned to Brazil.
The Brazilian Ministry of Justice and local media report that travelers complained about the transport conditions. According to recordings presented by Globo TV, passengers had their hands and feet shackled.
Globo reported that the weekend deportation was chaotic. There was conflict on board between the deportees and crew members. One of the issues was the difficult travel conditions, including the absence of air conditioning.
An additional problem was the delay and change in the flight route from the U.S. to Brazil. The plane, instead of landing in Belo Horizonte, made a longer stop at the airport in Manaus due to a technical problem.
The subsequent journey was conducted on a military transport plane sent by the Brazilian army. Before boarding, the Brazilian deportees had their restraints removed.
Biden deported more Brazilians than Trump
Reporting the incident, Globo and CNN Brasil recalled that deportations of Brazilians from the U.S. have not been uncommon in recent years. They occurred both during Trump's first term and Biden's presidency.
President Biden deported more Brazilians from the U.S. than Trump, summarized CNN Brasil, noting that Biden's administration expelled over 7,100 citizens of Brazil, compared to Trump's 6,700.
