Filtering pitchers are becoming increasingly popular. They are essentially a regular pitcher that contains a special filter, which purifies the water of impurities. Some models even enrich the water with minerals, such as magnesium.

This solution eliminates the need for plastic bottles and could save you a significant amount of money. However, like all pitchers, they may develop unsightly limescale over time. Not sure how to get rid of these deposits? Let's show you a simple way.

How does a filtering pitcher work?

A filtering pitcher is a very convenient solution. All it requires is for you to pour water into the pitcher and wait a few minutes for the water to pass through the filter. The filtered water is completely free of impurities. Some filters may also add minerals to your water.

These pitchers typically range from around $5.30 to about $13.20. The final price will depend on the size of the pitcher and the number of filters. Generally, one filter lasts for about four weeks. At this point, it should be replaced. But have you ever wondered about how the filter itself works?

Inside the filter, there's a special insert made of activated carbon, which cleans the water of chlorine, sand, limescale, and pollutants that could be harmful to our health. The filtered water is soft and even mildly sweet in taste. Many find that it can successfully substitute for bottled mineral or spring water.

How to remove limescale from a filtering pitcher?

Even though the pitcher houses a filter that softens the water, limescale can still begin to accumulate. This is a completely natural occurrence and virtually unavoidable. So, how can you remove these unwanted deposits? Descaler or vinegar aren't the best choices. Instead, you can use lemon juice and citric acid, which are both effective for eliminating limescale.

How should you use these ingredients? Begin by preparing a solution. Boil some water and mix it with either lemon juice or citric acid in a 3:1 ratio. Then, remove the filter and fill the pitcher with the solution you've prepared. Leave it that way for 2 hours. Afterward, shake the pitcher to shed any lingering deposits. Finally, rinse the pitcher and dry it with clean paper. Done correctly, this method will leave your pitcher free of limescale.
