Kratos Defense & Security has announced the signing of a letter of intent with Boeing, whose task will be to use the TDI-J85 engine as the propulsion for a new version of the guided JDAM bomb. This is an important change, as it will give the bombs capabilities similar to maneuvering missiles.
Maneuvering missiles from old JDAM bombs
It's worth mentioning that the American JDAM bombs, when they first went into use, had a large impact. The kit consists of a tail section with control surfaces, a tensioning set, and a guidance unit. And although it wasn't very accurate, it provided substantial fire support at a distance up to 17 miles in any weather conditions. The bombs reached various countries outside the US, including Ukraine.
The newly formed collaboration between Boeing and Kratos Defense & Security is expected to result in the development of PJDAM. The result will be a new bomb with the characteristics of maneuverable missiles. As Boeing indicates, the project will significantly increase the range of weapon operation. At the same time, it will be attractive in terms of unit costs, which will undoubtedly be a great advantage.
From the information provided, it appears that the PJDAM can extended the range of the bomb up to 807 miles and make it capable of even avoiding the enemy's air defense and hitting targets with high accuracy. There will also be additional improvements that will increase its defense and expand its applications. Boeing assures that it will easily be able to supply the new bombs to all 35 countries that currently use the JDAM system.
