DailyMail.co.uk reports that a British couple was taken to the hospital with second-degree burns after a boat explosion in Mallorca. A 44-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were working on the engine of a Zodiac-type boat when the explosion occurred. The force of the explosion threw them into the water at Palma port.

As it turns out, another, neighboring boat also caught fire as a result of the explosion. The victims sustained burns to their faces and arms, as well as less serious burns on other parts of their bodies.

Footage from the scene showed plumes of black smoke rising into the air, visible from miles away. After several emergency calls, police and emergency services, including the fire department, quickly arrived at the scene. The fire was efficiently contained, but both damaged boats sank.

Are faulty rental boats in Spanish resorts responsible for accidents?

This is not the only such dangerous incident on Spanish waters in recent days. DailyMail.co.uk reminds us that just last week, a British tourist was among three injured in a boat explosion at the Cabo Roig recreational port in Costa Blanca.

A 37-year-old man was taken to the hospital in Torrevieja with facial burns, as was a 31-year-old Lithuanian woman. The third person, a 34-year-old Spaniard, was transported by helicopter to a hospital in Valencia with severe burns to the lower part of his body.

The police described the incident as an accident, but the investigation is still ongoing. Footage showed concerned witnesses running towards the site of the explosion after noticing a fireball. The most seriously injured Spaniard was an employee who was cleaning the boat at the time of the explosion. The police are investigating the possibility of a fuel leak or engine failure as the cause of the blast.

The boats involved in the Mallorca accident and at Cabo Roig were rental boats.
