The trend of electrification does not spare even the traditionally sportier segments. It's widely known that even iconic BMW M models will soon have electric counterparts, and the latest registration of the name 'iM3' seems to corroborate that claim.

Admittedly, the current nomenclature of BMW models can be somewhat complex. Designations such as 'X3 xDrive30i' or 'iX eDrive50' are not particularly easy to decipher or remember. However, it is strongly suggested that BMW may simplify its naming conventions in the future.

As reported by CarBuzz and TheDrive, the Bavarian manufacturer has applied to register the 'iM3' designation. This points not only towards a shift in nomenclature but also signals the imminent arrival of an electric equivalent to the M3.

Due to technical considerations, the upcoming electric car is expected to differ significantly from the current generation of the combustion M3. It will likely be a more potent version of the new electric 'Neue Klasse' platform.

According to unofficial reports from BMW Blog, the vehicle is projected to harbor up to four electric motors generating a collective power of over 700 KM. Confirmation of these reports remains pending.
