Designing an appealing compact sedan is challenging. Many vehicles in this segment have struggled with awkward proportions. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, introduced in 2019, also received mixed reviews regarding its design. Thankfully, the extensive facelift has brought about the desired improvements.
A completely new face
Technically, the 2 Series Gran Coupé is essentially the 1 Series with a sedan body. It features the same newly designed interior, powertrain options, and refreshed front as the new 1 Series. This is positive news, as the updated front design suits the sedan better.
The hood is now slightly longer and lower, and the narrower headlights and grille enhance its sleek appearance. The higher upper edge of the windshield and the Hofmeister kink near the C-pillar further bolster this impression.
The wheelbase remains constant at 105 inches, but the overall body length has increased slightly, now measuring 179 inches (+1 inch), positively affecting the vehicle's proportions and visual appeal.
It’s also important to highlight the car's new streamlined rear. The same lights used in the hatchback are featured here and are an improvement over those in the previous model.
Digital minimalism
The interior, identical to the 1 Series, has seen more changes than the exterior. A compact version has replaced the traditional gear selector, and, as is typical for BMW, the dashboard is dominated by two connected screens measuring 10.25 inches and 10.7 inches.
The rear differs from the 1 Series due to the sloping roof, reducing headroom. Individuals over 5'11" may find it challenging to sit comfortably. The trunk is not particularly large either, with a capacity ranging from 13 to 15 cubic feet depending on the powertrain version. However, the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat is a noteworthy feature.
Familiar engines
The engine options remain the same as in the 1 Series. Initially, the lineup will include a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with 168 hp, alongside two diesel options—the 148-hp 118d and the 161-hp 120d- incorporating mild hybrid technology. Later, the top-of-the-line M235i version with a 300-hp gasoline engine and xDrive all-wheel drive will be added. A 7-speed automatic transmission is standard for all versions.
Successful facelift
The comprehensive update has significantly benefited the 2 Series. The vehicle now boasts improved proportions and a more cohesive design. Given its technical similarities to the 1 Series, it is expected to perform well on the road, too. There is a good chance it will finally gain customer appreciation and become a more common sight.
However, its success will largely depend on pricing. The new prices are expected to be announced soon. To date, the 2 Series Gran Coupé started at 154,000 PLN. Post-facelift, the price is likely to increase slightly.
