Black ice chaos: 53‑car pile-up disrupts South Korea
A pile-up involving 53 cars occurred in South Korea, caused by black ice following heavy snowfall. Eleven people were injured.

On Wednesday, South Korea faced heavy snowfall that paralyzed parts of the country. In Yongin, near Seoul, as much as 19 inches of snow fell.
The portal "The Korea Herald" reported a pile-up at an off-ramp near Wonju, where 53 cars collided, injuring eleven people. The police are investigating the causes of the accident, pointing to black ice as the main factor.
Analysis of surveillance recordings showed that the road was covered in "black ice." The snow complicated traffic not only on highways but also in Seoul, where 18 routes were blocked. City authorities increased the number of subway services to accommodate commuters.
Major disruptions in the Seoul region
Due to the snowstorm, over 150 flights and 100 ferry services were canceled or rescheduled. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety reported that more than 130 homes in Seoul lost power.
Power issues also affected other cities in the capital's metropolitan area. The heavy snowfall significantly impacted the daily lives of South Korean residents.
