On Sunday evening, Joe Biden announced he would not run for the U.S. presidency. Following this announcement, the internet and global media exploded with activity.
He shared his decision on the X platform. "I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country that I step aside," Biden declared.
Shortly after, he endorsed Kamala Harris, the current U.S. vice president, as the Democratic Party candidate.
Biden withdraws, American politicians "respect decision"
Hillary and Bill Clinton have announced their support for Harris. "We will do everything in our power to support her. America's future depends on it," their statement reads.
Nancy Pelosi, former Democratic Party leader in the House of Representatives and a longtime Biden ally, emphasized that Biden "always put America first."
The post from Biden, containing a screenshot of his letter, was previously shared by First Lady Jill Biden. However, she did not comment; she merely noted that the decision involved many emotions.
Former U.S. President Barack Obama also commented on Biden's resignation. "He was one of America's most influential presidents and also my dear friend and partner," he wrote on the X platform. His wife, Michelle Obama, also shared the post.
Naomi Biden, the president's granddaughter, expressed pride in Biden's decision. "Our world is better because of him. He always cared about America's welfare," she emphasized.
Kamala Harris speaks out
In a statement, Kamala Harris noted that she is "honored to have the president's support" and intends to work hard for the Democratic Party's nomination.
"There are 107 days left until the election. Together we will fight. And together we will win," reads Harris's statement, which appeared on the campaign website instead of via the White House.
