- The speech occurred at a conference in Chicago, organized by an association for caregivers of disabled social care beneficiaries.
Are benefits for seniors at risk?
During the conference in Chicago, Joe Biden focused on defending the Social Security system against cuts that could disrupt benefit payments. The former president emphasized that retirees may face difficulties accessing offices, which could result in payment delays.
"Seriously, people are now genuinely concerned for the first time in history, for the first and only time in history, that Social Security benefits may be delayed or interrupted," Biden warned.
Alarm over divisions in the USA
Biden expressed concern about deep divisions in American society, which he believes are greater than ever before.
"We can’t go on like this as a divided nation, as divided as we are. I said I’ve been doing this a long time, it’s never been this divided," the former president said. He also pointed to the lack of "heart" among MAGA supporters, which he believes deepens these divisions.
White House reaction
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt mocked Biden, saying she was shocked that the former president decided to speak at such a late hour, because he usually goes to bed at that hour.
" President Trump is absolutely certain about protecting Social Security benefits for law-abiding tax-paying American citizens and seniors who have paid into this program. He will always protect that program," she added.
Upon leaving office, Biden promised an active post-presidency, but so far he has refrained from public statements, despite daily criticism from his successor. According to CNN, Biden spends most of his time at his family home in Wilmington, Delaware, and visits his office in Washington once a week, traveling by train.
