Biden approves $8 billion arms deal with Israel amid scrutiny

Two weeks before leaving office, President Joe Biden decided that the United States would sell arms worth $8 billion to Israel. The White House has already informed Congress of its intentions.

According to Reuters, the transaction includes ammunition for fighter jets, attack helicopters, as well as artillery missiles and bombs. The package will include AIM-120C-8 air-to-air missiles, 6-inch (155 mm) artillery shells, and Hellfire AGM-114 missiles.

The agreement requires approval from the House of Representatives and Senate committees.

President Biden emphasized that Israel has the right to defend its citizens "in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law". He also assured that the United States will continue to support Israel by providing the necessary defense capabilities.

According to Reuters sources, the arms sale primarily aims to strengthen Israel's defense capabilities in the face of aerial threats, such as drones.
