The 83-year-old Sanders will represent Vermont in the United States Senate for the fourth time. In this year's election, which began on Tuesday, the independent candidate defeated Republican Gerald Malloy.

Sanders is a veteran of the U.S. political scene and the longest-serving independent U.S. Congress member.

Recently, Sanders has worked closely with President Joe Biden's administration to achieve his goals in healthcare, education, workers' rights, and childcare.

During one televised debate, Sanders addressed his age and reasons for running again. "I just did not feel with my seniority and with my experience that I could walk away from Vermont, representing Vermont, at this difficult moment in American history," Sanders confessed.

Sanders was a member of the House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007 and was then elected to the Senate, where he still serves today. In 2016 and 2020, he unsuccessfully sought the Democratic Party nomination in the primaries preceding the presidential election.
