Berlin train station tragedy: Woman dead, child critical after ICE train accident

On Wednesday, May 22, at the central station in Berlin, a woman and a child fell under an ICE train. The woman died, and her child is fighting for life. The station in Germany was closed entirely.

7:16 AM EDT, May 23, 2024

According to the police report, the woman and child stepped off the platform and were hit by an oncoming long-distance ICE train. The Berlin fire department announced that from 12:30 PM on the scene, there was a large contingent of emergency services after the "tragic accident."

One person was hit by the train and died on the spot. Another person was seriously injured. We are also taking care of other people - the fire department announced.

The woman died on the spot, and the child was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital by a rescue helicopter. The child is currently in the intensive care unit, and doctors are fighting for their life.

According to the spokeswoman for the federal police, the Berlin state police have launched a death investigation. It cannot be ruled out that the incident was a suicide.

The report indicates that police officers and firefighters received clear signals from witnesses that the woman wanted to take her own life. Authorities reported that 16 witnesses were in shock - reads the dw.com website.
