Bedtime drinks to boost metabolism and curb midnight cravings

There's no single magic potion that will make you wake up slimmer. However, there are clever tricks that can help kick-start your metabolism, and one of them involves what you drink before bed. While it's well-known that water is the best choice, you can also opt for other beverages.

There are no miracles, only choices. While no tea can transform you into Anatolij (that guy from TikTok with an Adonis-like physique and otherworldly weightlifting skills) overnight, a well-chosen bedtime drink can have a surprising impact. It not only calms and soothes racing thoughts but also helps your metabolism get to work—and prevents midnight snacking.

Of course, exercise, sleep, and diet are fundamental. Yet, there are drinks that act like unsung heroes backstage. They're clever, inconspicuous, and effective. No, I'm not talking about a lychee smoothie with gold and unicorn tears gathered under a Capricorn full moon, which costs a fortune. Here, just plain water will do. But if you're feeling adventurous, read on for some interesting suggestions.

What to drink before bed to avoid raiding the fridge? It's not just water that's suitable

There's no need to explain why water is essential. It boosts metabolism, quickly makes us feel full, and contains zero calories. Can it get any better? And you don't have to drink plain tap water, as there are countless varieties available in stores: sparkling, still, lightly sparkling, mineral water—the list goes on. Drinking water (in appropriate amounts, of course, because too little is bad and too much is also bad) helps the body function more efficiently, speeds up metabolism, aids in digestion, and reduces hunger. Most importantly, when you drink water, your intestines aren't a battlefield.

Let's say you're not a fan of plain water and you don't want to add watermelon or lemon juice to it. What then? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Ginger tea – containing gingerol, it speeds up digestion and keeps sugar levels in check, reducing sudden hunger attacks. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, allowing the body to rest instead of fighting itself.
  • Chamomile – ever wonder why grandmas love this herb? It reduces stress, soothes the digestive system, and prepares the body for sleep. When you sleep better, you don't snack at night—a win-win situation.
  • Fenugreek – packed with fiber, it maintains a feeling of fullness and calms the appetite. Plus, it supports intestinal and pancreatic functions, minimizing bloating and promoting a flat stomach.
  • A drink with psyllium husk – an underrated kitchen hero. Thanks to its fiber and omega-3 content, it tidies up the intestines, calms hunger, and improves digestion. In the morning, it provides a better start than the strongest coffee (and not just in terms of energy).

Here's a small suggestion: at your next Netflix or YouTube session, instead of reaching for a bag of chips, chocolate, or pizza, try brewing yourself some chamomile tea or a flaxseed drink. Water is also a great choice. After a few days of this, you'll notice a significant difference: better sleep, more energy, and a smaller number on the scale.
