How to get rid of the unpleasant fish smell
This tried-and-true method is incredibly simple. All you need to do is soak the fish in milk spiced with herbs for 2 hours. This quickly eliminates the unpalatable taste and smell, often likened to mud. Should you prefer alternatives, the milk can be replaced with lemon, celery or parsley. Slice these ingredients and drape them over the fish, then leave to soak for three hours. Interestingly, some even use pickle brine or sauerkraut juice, giving the fish a distinctive flavor not to everyone's liking.
Though these methods can reduce the smell of the fish itself, it often lingers on hands and utensils. The solution? Wash your hands and soak them in salt water for three minutes, followed by a rub-down with lemon juice. Salt can also be used to clean dishes and cutlery. Simply follow up with a rinse in warm water.
