Today, I’ll take you on a small culinary journey to British cuisine. My good friend, who lives in the United Kingdom, knows very well that I love to experiment in the kitchen. That’s why she encouraged me to try a recipe for the iconic Scottish-originated scones.
Scones, as they are traditionally called, are very popular among the British, who usually serve them with afternoon tea. These scones can be prepared in both sweet and savory versions. Today, I want to focus on the savory version. Combining the crumbly scones with zucchini, bacon, and cheddar cheese is worth combining.
British scones have won the hearts of my whole family. It will be the same for you
Ingredients:
Dough:
- 14 oz all-purpose flour
- 2 oz chilled butter
- 2 eggs
- ¾ cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon salt
Additions:
- 10 oz smoked bacon
- 2 small zucchinis
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 5 oz grated cheddar cheese
- 1 beaten egg
Preparation:
Step 1. Prepare the savory additions before starting to make this British snack. Cut the smoked bacon into smaller pieces and fry it in a pan.
Step 2. Next, handle the zucchinis. Grate the vegetables, lightly sprinkle them with salt, and set them aside for 20 minutes. Afterward, thoroughly drain the excess water from the zucchinis.
Step 3. Prepare the scone base, which consists of flour, chilled butter, salt, and a mixture of eggs and buttermilk.
Step 4. Add the savory ingredients to the bowl: grated cheddar cheese, previously prepared bacon, and drained zucchini pieces.
Step 5. Knead all the ingredients into a uniform dough, then shape it into a large, round, flat disc. Cut it into pieces, creating small triangles.
Step 6. Place the prepared scones on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. Brush each triangle with a beaten egg using a kitchen brush. Then, place the scones in a preheated oven for 25 minutes. The oven should be set to 390 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 7. Once baked, sprinkle the scones with chopped parsley and serve them with your favorite sauce. Enjoy!
