66 people have been reported missing, but it is feared that all of them may have perished. Continuous monsoon rains are hampering the rescue operation, and the road leading to the accident site is blocked in several places due to the avalanche.
The avalanche came suddenly
The head of the local administration, Khima Nanada Bhusai, informed the media that the disaster occurred on Friday, July 12. The avalanche struck suddenly and pushed the buses into the river.
It is known that 24 people were traveling on one bus and 42 on the other. However, these numbers do not account for additional passengers who might have boarded later, as the buses were indeed overcrowded.
Monsoon season
The monsoon season in this part of the world starts in June and lasts until September. In Nepal, it causes prolonged and heavy rains. Due to the mountainous terrain, avalanches are a common consequence.
Earlier in July, the media reported that several people had died or were missing in Nepal due to flooding and landslides following heavy rains.
