Social media is now a part of our everyday lives, used not only by adults but especially by kids and teenagers. This frequent use often leads to various addictions as the younger generation feels the need to be online constantly, fearing they might miss out. As a result, disturbing situations arise where children cannot live without a phone and regular access to Instagram or TikTok.
Social media not for teenagers
The Australian Parliament has solidified its stance on social media following a lengthy deliberation on ensuring young people do not have access. Discussions among politicians were often fraught with arguments and tensions. Not everyone agrees that children should be restricted from using Instagram or TikTok until they reach a certain age. However, a consensus has finally been reached. Parliamentarians have announced that a very significant decision has been made.
Social media platforms are being given a year to implement age verification systems before facing potential penalties. Starting in January, enforcement methods for this requirement will be tested, with the full implementation set for the following year. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X risk fines of up to $33 million if they fail to meet the new standards.
