Austin Butler, known for his performances in films like Elvis and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, has been cast as Patrick Bateman in the upcoming remake of American Psycho. The film will be directed by the acclaimed Luca Guadagnino and produced by Lionsgate.
Austin Butler as Patrick Bateman
Initial rumors suggested Jacob Elordi would play Patrick Bateman, but Austin Butler was ultimately chosen for the role. Butler, who impressed audiences with his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's film, now has the opportunity to demonstrate his versatility in a completely different genre.
American Psycho, originally a novel by Bret Easton Ellis, is a satire on the consumerism and materialism of the 1980s. The tale of Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street yuppie and psychopathic killer, became popular due to the 2000 film adaptation, which starred Christian Bale in the lead role. However, Guadagnino's version will not seek to replicate that film but rather offer a new interpretation of the novel.
Luca Guadagnino at the helm of production
Luca Guadagnino is celebrated for his subtle, emotionally nuanced character portraits and distinctive approach to various film genres. His portfolio includes works like "Call Me by Your Name," "Suspiria," and "Bones and All." His recent projects, "Queer" and "Challengers," have both garnered critical acclaim and Golden Globe nominations. Fans anticipate that Guadagnino's take on "American Psycho" may emphasize the erotic aspects, which are a signature of his filmmaking style.
Scott Z. Burns, known for projects like "The Laundromat," will write the screenplay. Production is set to begin following the conclusion of another Guadagnino project, "After the Hunt," featuring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield.
Patrick Bateman - a cultural icon
The character of Patrick Bateman, immortalized by Christian Bale, has achieved cult status not just among film enthusiasts. His iconic appearance and memorable lines have become popular meme material, especially in online communities. Bateman is also viewed as an icon of the "sigma male" movement—a term describing independent, assertive men.
