The movie, which had its world premiere on December 20, 2023, was expected to replicate the success of the original Aquaman film. For context, the first installment, released five years prior and featuring the same director and stars—Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, grossed over $1.14 billion worldwide on a modest budget of $160 million. Now, the context has significantly changed, impacting the sequel's performance.

Matching the success of the previous box office hit was a tall order, but non-cinematic events also contributed to the sequel's disappointing performance. Particularly, the public's attention was gripped by the controversial trial between Heard and her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, in 2022. The revelations from the court case negatively affected Heard's public image.

On-set controversies

Behind-the-scenes issues also contributed to the tension. Rumors abounded that Jason Momoa, the project's biggest star, had problems with alcohol, and there were discussions of completely cutting Heard's character from the film. Business tycoon Elon Musk, who had been involved with Heard, allegedly intervened, even purportedly threatening Warner Bros. executives. Details related to Heard's therapist also emerged.

Consequently, Heard was not featured in the film's trailer, as if the creators were distancing themselves from the controversial actress. In short, the production was embroiled in one scandal after another.

An expensive underperformance

While sensational episodes traditionally boost a film's visibility and, consequently, ticket sales, that was certainly not the case here. The $205 million Aquaman sequel grossed only $377 million. Despite outperforming other DC releases of the year, like the "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" ($132.3 million) and "Blue Beetle" ($128.8 million), it paled in comparison to the overwhelming success of the first Aquaman movie. Consequently, its release on streaming platforms came just over a month after its theatrical release.

As "The Direct" reports, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" will become available to rent or purchase on VOD platforms beginning Tuesday, January 23, 2024. However, details about its availability on the Max platform have not been confirmed. The same outlet suggests it could be available in early March.

You can watch James Wan's original "Aquaman" movie on HBO Max and Player platforms.
