Apple TV+'s "Wolfs" flops, sequel plans axed

Apple TV+'s decision to limit the theatrical distribution of "Wolfs" with George Clooney and Brad Pitt surprised the film industry. Director Jon Watts announced that he would not proceed with the planned sequel, losing trust in the platform as a creative partner. What exactly happened?

Lone, abandoned wolves

Apple TV+ has long been known for its excellent series, but it hasn't had much luck with feature films recently. Productions like "Napoleon" and "Argylle" received mixed reactions from American critics and audiences and didn't particularly stand out in the global box office. One consequence of this was the reduced distribution of the new film featuring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. You might have seen a trailer for "Wolfs" that looked quite promising. However, after the film's poor reception in the United States, the distributor decided that the film would have a short and limited theatrical run.

The strategy changed just before the premiere. The film was scheduled to be shown for only a week before debuting on the streaming platform. Apple TV+'s decision was a shock to the cast and crew. Director Jon Watts announced that he is abandoning the potential sequel because he "no longer trusted them as a creative partner," as reported by Collider.

According to Collider, "Wolfs" could have successfully filled the gap between high-budget productions and festival films, offering an original concept not tied to existing franchises. In a word, it finally offered something new. This was partially confirmed by reports from the American press stating that the film is enjoying success on streaming platforms.
