This incredible discovery took place on Sardinia, an Italian island frequented by tourists. A unique collection of coins and African amphorae was uncovered from the sea near the town of Arzachena in the province of Sassari.
A Unique Discovery in Sardinia
The bronze coins were minted between 324 and 340 A.D., following the monetary reform executed in the Roman Empire by Emperor Diocletian, as explained by experts.
A scuba diver, who noticed the metal objects submerged deep in the sea, made the discovery. He alerted the authorities, and the following day, a marine inspection was performed near the coast by divers from a special archaeological monument protection unit. The Cultural Heritage Protection Unit Carabinieri also arrived at the scene.
Enormous quantities of coins were unearthed from the sand, all in superb condition. Based on the weight of the find, it is predicted that there are around 30 to 50 thousand. Only four coins are damaged but they're still readable. The coins originate from various mints that were operational in the Roman Empire.
The Ministry of Culture highlighted that the treasure found off the shores of Arzachena is one of the most significant numismatic discoveries.
Sardinia: A Holiday Paradise in Italy
Sardinia, the Mediterranean Sea's second-largest island, entices tourists with its turquoise, transparent water, and landscape reminiscent of the Seychelles. Its white sand coupled with water and wind-polished rocks and the extraordinary color of the sea make it a dream vacation spot.
The Emerald Coast, also known as the Riviera Costa Smeralda, is renowned for being a luxury oasis, and Porto Cervo is considered a paradise for the wealthy and celebrities. The Emerald Coast is a two-time recipient of the Tourist Oscar - the title of the most beautiful beach in the World Travel Awards.
Undoubtedly, one of the most picturesque towns on the island is Castelsardo, established in the early 12th century. Situated on a small, rocky promontory, it offers a unique atmosphere due to its narrow streets with stone stairs.
