Americans skeptical about Trump's tariffs benefiting economy
Americans largely do not believe that imposing tariffs on foreign products will benefit the U.S. economy. Nearly half of those surveyed think that actions taken by Donald Trump could actually harm the American economy.
The Marquette poll was conducted on February 5, surveying a sample of 1,063 people. The question was straightforward: Do tariffs help or hurt the American economy?
46 percent of respondents answered "hurt." Meanwhile, 24 percent said they "help," and 13 percent of those surveyed expressed no opinion on the matter.
Donald Trump imposes tariffs
Donald Trump threatened to implement new 25 percent tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods, set to take effect at the beginning of February. However, this decision was postponed for a month.
The new date for these tariffs to take effect is March 4. The rationale for imposing them includes accusations of inadequate border control by both countries and concerns about illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking.
Contrary to initial threats, Trump does not plan to impose tariffs on China at this time. Even before taking office, he had announced intentions to impose a 10 percent tariff on all products from China, concurrently with tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada.
Trump has also announced plans to impose tariffs on the European Union.
