Amazon workers strike nationwide for better conditions
Amazon employees at seven locations across the USA have begun a strike, demanding better working conditions. Organized by the Teamsters union, the action aims to pressure the company during the peak shopping season.
Employees in New York, Georgia, California, and Illinois are calling for higher wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions. The Teamsters union orchestrated the strike to bring Amazon to the negotiating table and avoid potential disruptions during the busy shopping season. According to CNBC, the union has given Amazon until Sunday to set negotiation dates.
Teamsters President Sean O'Brien remarked, "If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon's unrestrained greed."
Amazon accuses the union
Amazon, founded by Jeff Bezos, has responded by accusing the union of misleading the public. The company claims that the protesters are mostly outsiders, not employees. Amazon emphasizes that it remains focused on delivering holiday orders.
The Teamsters union states that nearly 10,000 Amazon employees have joined their ranks, which is less than 1 percent of the 1.53 million people employed by the company. This Thursday's action marks the largest strike against Amazon in US history. Efforts to unionize at Amazon began in 2022, when warehouse workers on Staten Island, New York, voted to join the union.
