Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez-Reed share blame in 'Rust' tragedy
In an interview with Bill Maher on his Club Random podcast, Quentin Tarantino admitted that although the primary responsibility lies with Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was in charge of the guns on set, Alec Baldwin is also partly to blame for the tragic accident that took place in 2021.

Let’s recall that the tragedy occurred in October 2021. In one of the scenes of "Rust," the well-known actor is handling an accidentally discharged gun. While the director and the screenwriter were fortunately only grazed, the cinematographer did not survive. Forty-two-year-old Hutchins was transported by helicopter to the hospital, but unfortunately, she could not be saved. Alec Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Tarantino points out those responsible
Quentin Tarantino said that every actor is also responsible for safety on set, especially when using guns. He believes that actors should personally check whether the guns they are using are safe and do not contain live rounds. That is why the iconic director thinks Gutierrez-Reed is 90% responsible for the cinematographer’s death and Baldwin the remaining 10%.
Baldwin’s case of involuntary manslaughter of Hutchins recently ended with the actor being acquitted by a judge in New Mexico. The justification for the verdict was the prosecution’s mishandling of evidence.
Meanwhile, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter of Hutchins. The tragic accident on the set of the movie "Rust" happened while Baldwin was rehearsing a scene with a revolver that unexpectedly discharged, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
Production on the film "Rust" has resumed, this time in Montana, under an agreement with the deceased’s husband, Matthew Hutchins, who has taken on the role of the film's executive producer. The film does not yet have a release date.
