With the onset of fall, you may notice more spiders starting to appear in your home. Although most prefer to hide in dark, seldom-visited corners, the situation changes during mating season when males come out searching for partners.
Natural essential oils – a way to deter spiders
Chris Houghton, a specialist from HomeServe, shares a simple and affordable method to get rid of spiders. In a conversation with The Sun, he reveals that natural essential oils, such as lavender, peppermint, or eucalyptus, are excellent deterrents. Spiders cannot stand their intense scents, effectively keeping them away from our homes.
To prepare such a spray, simply mix the chosen essential oil with water and spray it on surfaces where you frequently see these insects. "You can find these oils in pharmacies; just add a few drops to a bottle of water and spray in areas where spiders might appear," says Houghton. An added bonus is the pleasant scent that won't bother household members and will create a nice atmosphere indoors.
Vinegar – an ingredient you already have in your kitchen
Another effective and inexpensive way to deal with spiders is vinegar—a product most of us have in the kitchen cupboard. Chris Houghton advises mixing vinegar, like essential oils, with water and spraying it in areas where spiders might appear.
"Initially, the smell may be intense, but it quickly dissipates, while spiders will still be able to detect it," emphasizes the expert.
While vinegar is safe for humans, spiders are exceptionally sensitive to its smell, making it an effective, non-toxic repellent.
Mint and rosemary – natural repellents you can grow at home
There are additional ways to get rid of spiders. Mint and rosemary are herbs that not only smell great but also effectively repel these insects.
To keep the herbs in good condition, it's advisable to place them on the windowsill and water them from below to maintain their freshness longer. Their intense fragrance deters spiders, while adding a natural, refreshing aroma to your home.
