Occasionally, rainbow trout is referred to as rainbow salmon due to belonging to the same family as salmon. Although they look almost identical at first glance, the price is the most significant difference between them. Rainbow trout is generally cheaper, ranging from $9.40-$16.48 per pound, whereas salmon ranges from $12.93-$32.92. This fish's meat is tender and mild, often exhibiting a pink or orange color.

Nutritional properties of rainbow trout

Rainbow trout is primarily known as a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids. It is found in higher concentrations in this fish than in most freshwater species. Regular consumption of trout provides numerous health benefits. In a 0.22 pound serving of raw trout, you will find:

  • 119 calories,
  • 3.5 grams of fat,
  • 20.5 grams of protein.

This fish is essentially devoid of carbohydrates, including sugars, and fiber. However, it is an excellent source of vitamins D, B3, B6, and E. It also delivers essential minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Regular consumption supports the cardiovascular system and positively influences cognitive functions.

Moreover, compared to fish like king mackerel or tuna, rainbow trout has a low level of mercury contamination (0.071 ppm) - significantly less than their levels exceeding 0.5 ppm. Studies also indicate that rainbow trout do not accumulate high amounts of heavy metals and contaminants. However, it is still crucial to ensure that the fish is sourced reliably.
