Absurd or genius? Giant escalator in China

Built in 2022 within the Chinese region of Zhejiang, the escalator leading to the picturesque Tianyu Mountain cost over 10 million Chinese yuan (approximately $1,582,800).

A hit among tourists

Stationed on the southern shore of Thousand Islands Lake in Chun'an County, the unique escalator leads to a peak just over 984 feet high. Although the rugged trail to the top is challenging and roughly a 50-minute climb, the escalator offers a speedy and sweat-free journey to the summit in just 10 minutes.

Additionally, the escalator is fitted with cooling systems that refresh tourists with water mist on hot days, allowing them to take in the splendid scenery during their ascent.

The creators maintain that the escalator isn't just an easy option for tourists who dislike exertion. It also caters to individuals who, due to health or mobility restrictions, can't reach the summit and take in the breathtaking views. However, those who wish to use it have to pay a fee of 30 Chinese yuan per person (approximately $4.75).

Divided opinions among netizens

Unquestionably, the Chinese attraction pulls in crowds. Many tourists express absolute delight about the accessibility and comfort it offers. "This is my kind of hiking", "Genius! I love it!", "I wouldn't mind such a walk" are some of the enthusiastic responses seen on social media.

Yet there's a faction of people who express displeasure at this form of interference with the natural environment. They argue that the escalator detracts from the achievement and thrill of a traditional hike. "It's painful witnessing such a desecration of the landscape" and "This method robs us of the joy and the feeling of accomplishment" are some views voiced in comments under a video showcasing the attraction.
