The fire at the famous Chatuchak weekend market in Bangkok started on Tuesday, June 11, in the morning, in the section where animals are sold. The fire quickly spread, covering an area of about 14,000 square feet.

Firefighters managed to control the fire within an hour. However, during this time about a thousand pets died, including cats, dogs, snakes, birds, and rabbits, which were kept in cages and locked in stores.

According to the BBC, stall owners reported that the screams of animals woke them up.

"Suddenly, thick smoke filled the air, making it impossible to breathe," one of the women said.

More photos and videos are hitting the web, showing the burning market and what remains.

Some shopkeepers live on the market premises, but how many of them were there when the fire broke out is unknown.

The fire destroyed about 100 stalls. According to the authorities, there are no human casualties.
