As a reporter for Network Ten in Australia, Antoinette Lattouf frequently receives feedback from her audience. Most of the messages she gets commonly pertain to her appearance or delivery of news. This particular correspondence, however, was considerably distinctive.
Life saved by an observant viewer
Following the Friday broadcast, one of the editors notified Antoinette about an unusual message regarding her health that appeared on Facebook.
"Has Antoinette Lattouf had her thyroid checked? I'm not trying to act smart or play a prank, I'm simply concerned about what I saw on the TV today," wrote Wendy McCoy.
Wendy McCoy clarified that she's not a doctor, but the lump on the left side of the reporter's neck seemed suspect to her. At first, Antoinette overlooked the message, yet found herself unable to dismiss it entirely. Upon revisiting the broadcast, she agreed with the viewer's observation.
"I was shocked. My neck appeared to have an Adam's apple. Something definitely protruded," wrote Antoinette in 10Daily.
Antoinette consulted with her family physician and undertook medical tests. An ultrasound and a CT scan revealed a large cyst on her thyroid, necessitating surgery. An autoimmune condition was also diagnosed.
Whilst the cyst was benign, leaving it unattended could have resulted in severe complications. Lattouf contacted Wendy to express her heartfelt gratitude. Wendy confessed she was initially hesitant about intervening, but she ultimately decided to reach out.
"Wendy, she reached out to me, a complete stranger, and encouraged me to consult a doctor. Thank you for your concern. Your random act of kindness likely saved my life," expressed Antoinette in her appreciation message.
