As the autumn/winter season approaches, we delve deep into our closets for warmer apparel. Down jackets, along with coats and furs, become a necessary shield against the freezing air. But how do we keep our down jackets looking fresh as we enter winter? A clever trick might come in handy.
In Poland, before the biting cold of winter fully sets in, it's ideal to freshen up your warm clothing. Though washing machines are usually avoided for washing down jackets or coats to maintain their good look, it might not be necessary to take your down jacket to the dry cleaner after all.
However, before tossing your jacket into the washing machine drum, it's crucial to check the internal labels. If the manufacturer allows machine washing, you can safely refresh your jacket using the following trick.
How Can You Wash a Down Jacket in a Washing Machine?
Before washing your down jacket, ensure its pockets are empty. Secure all zippers and buttons, and turn the jacket inside out. Before placing it in the washing machine, immerse it in cold water briefly, gently squeezing out any excess air trapped in the jacket's insulation.
Now that your jacket has been prepared, it's time to put it in the washing machine drum. Here comes the critical part: add a few tennis balls to the washing machine. These inexpensive items prevent the down filling from clumping together, enabling your jacket to regain its original appearance swiftly. Moreover, you'll end up with a clean and refreshingly fragrant jacket.
Selecting the Right Washing Program Matters
Every jacket comes with washing instructions on its attached labels or tags. Typically, down jackets should be washed at a minimal temperature, ensuring not to exceed 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Pay attention to the spin cycle too – ideally, it should range between 400 and 600 rotations.
Avoid general powder or liquid detergent and washing capsules for washing a down jacket. Preferably, use special emulsions designed for washing down clothing. These can be found in various sizes at local drugstores. While refreshing your jacket, refrain from using fabric softener.
