Proper hydration is key to healthy body functioning. Most of us reach for water to this end, but Scottish scientists' research has shown that a certain drink hydrates us even better.

The human body is 70% water. Water is an excellent solvent for all the elements and vitamins that form the basis of life's processes. Each person should consume at least 2 quarts of water daily.

During hot weather, you should drink even more to avoid dehydration. Scottish scientists' research has proven that it's not water but another drink that hydrates the body best. What drink is it?

Heatwaves can be exhausting and even dangerous. When the temperature exceeds 86 degrees Fahrenheit, leaving the house is risky. Staying in solid sunlight can lead to a stroke, and an insufficient amount of water can lead to dehydration.

What should you drink during hot weather? Water seems to be the most reasonable solution, as it provides all the necessary elements. Experts recommend drinking at least two quarts of pure water throughout a hot day.

The latest research from Scottish scientists has shown that there is a drink that hydrates even better than water. Researchers from St. Andrews University gathered 72 men aged 18-35 and gave them 13 different beverages. Thirty minutes after drinking, they were asked for a urine sample. The analysis showed that the best hydration was provided by a drink full of fat and protein. The high content of these nutrients means that the drink is not absorbed as quickly, leading to better body hydration.

"This study tells us much of what we already knew: Electrolytes - like sodium and potassium - contribute to better hydration, while calories in beverages result in slower gastric emptying and therefore slower release of urination," explained Melissa Majumdar, a dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, quoted by CBS News.

The study was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Beverages such as coffee, orange juice, cola, diet cola, iced tea, tea, isotonic drink, sparkling water, still water, beer, as well as skimmed and whole milk were considered.

Urine analysis showed that the best-hydrating drink is skimmed milk. The small amount of fat, protein, sodium, and sugar in milk ensures that the nutrients stay in the body longer. If you want to prevent dehydration, in addition to water, also drink milk.
