A few Republicans would like to see the Russians win, says Don Bacon
The US Congress has not yet approved military aid for Ukraine. "If we don't do this, the Russians will be in Kyiv. Unfortunately, a few of my colleagues would like to see the Russians win," said Republican Don Bacon.
While speaking on C-SPAN on Thursday, Don Bacon, a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives, accused some of his fellow Republicans of echoing Russian propaganda and favoring Russia's success in its invasion of Ukraine.
Bacon characterized the situation in Ukraine as dire, emphasizing the urgent need for support in terms of ammunition to keep resisting the Russian advances.
"They have no more artillery. If we don’t do this, the Russians will be in Kiev. Unfortunately, a few of my colleagues would like to see the Russians win. I don’t know why that is the case. I think it’s a terrible thing," Bacon commented. He did not mention which of his peers he believed harbored such views.
Crucial legislation for Ukraine
Ukraine is consistently appealing to its Western allies for additional ammunition and anti-aircraft defense systems as Russian forces relentlessly bombard its cities and crucial infrastructure daily.
On Wednesday, Republican members of the House of Representatives introduced drafts for three bills aimed at supporting Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific region. The proposals suggest setting aside nearly $61 billion in aid for Ukraine. US President Joe Biden endorsed the legislative package on Wednesday, urging both chambers of Congress to fast-track these drafts and stating his readiness to sign them into law immediately. The vote is scheduled for Saturday.
Tom Cole, Chair of the House Budget Committee, stated: "I know this to be true: if we don't help our friends in time of need, soon enough, we won't have any friends at all. The time is now to act."." Cole emphasized the urgency of passing these bills and forwarding them to the Senate.
