The film "Nuremberg" is largely based on the 2015 novel "Göring and the Psychiatrist: A Tragic Duel of Minds". The book, penned by American journalist Jack El-Hai, explores the unique relationship between Hermann Göring, one of the key figures of the Third Reich, and his psychiatrist, Douglas M. Kelley.
About the book "Göring and the Psychiatrist"
The official description frames El-Hai's work as an exploration of this exceptional bond. With Hermann Göring, Ross Lovell unpacked a dozen monogrammed suitcases at the American investigative center in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg. These suitcases housed uniforms, silk underwear, slippers, a hot-water bag, four pairs of glasses, numerous watches, tie clips and cufflinks, valuable cigarette cases, diamond and ruby-encrusted rings, and medals. It was here that the former Reich Marshal met Douglas M. Kelley, a military psychiatrist, who was set on understanding what drove Nazi leaders to criminality.
After having several conversations with Göring, Rudolf Hess, Hans Frank, and other soon-to-be Nuremberg defendants, Kelley came to a startling conclusion. These Nazis were not monsters or products of specific character traits unique to Germans. They were similar to us, and it was only their ascent to power under favorable circumstances that allowed them to carry out the most daring and monstrous actions.
On October 15, 1946, Hermann Göring committed suicide by ingesting cyanide. Precisely the same fate befell Dr. Douglas M. Kelley on New Year's Day, 1958.
