Trump praises Russian 'good faith' in surprise Marc Fogel release
Donald Trump stated that the U.S. gave "not much" to Russia in exchange for the release of Marc Fogel. He added that he hopes this signals an improvement in relations, which could help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
Trump emphasized that Russia was "very nice" in this situation. "We were treated very nicely by Russia, actually. I hope that's the beginning of a relationship where we can end that war," the President of the U.S. stated.
Marc Fogel, a teacher who was sentenced in 2022 to 14 years in prison for possession of a small amount of marijuana, was released thanks to an exchange negotiated by the special envoy for the Middle East, Steven Witkoff. The White House did not disclose what Russia received in return but noted that it was a gesture of "good faith" by Russia.
The role of Steven Witkoff
Steven Witkoff, a close friend of Trump and former developer, played a key role in the negotiations for Fogel's release. The "New York Times" reports that Trump tasked Witkoff with participating in the negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine as well.
Trump announced that he would meet with Fogel at the White House later on Tuesday evening.
