The U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration plans to revoke temporary residency permits for 240,000 Ukrainian refugees. This information was reported by Reuters, citing a senior official in the American administration.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt wrote on platform X that the decision on this matter has not yet been made.
"This is more fake news from Reuters based on anonymous sources who have no idea what they are talking about," she emphasized.
The decision to revoke protection for Ukrainian refugees would mark a significant reversal of the policy under the previous president, Joe Biden. Trump aims to revoke temporary residency opportunities in the U.S. for a total of about 1.8 million migrants. According to documents obtained by Reuters, once the protection is withdrawn, migrants could be subject to expedited deportation.
Trump signs decrees
Among the decrees signed by Trump after taking office was an order to eliminate temporary humanitarian protection programs implemented by Biden. These programs included not only Ukrainians but also 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, and over 70,000 Afghans.
Before leaving office, Biden extended the protection program for Ukrainian refugees, which was supposed to last until October 2026. The Ukrainian Embassy in the U.S. has not yet commented on these reports. Trump’s decisions could affect the fate of many individuals seeking refuge in the United States.
