The American Democratic Party held a three-day convention in Chicago intended to strengthen its campaign before the November presidential elections. Many prominent figures support Kamala Harris's candidacy. On the second day of the event, former presidential couple Michelle and Barack Obama appeared, and on Wednesday, former American president Bill Clinton was present.
Popular American presenter and television producer Oprah Winfrey was among those who decided to appear on stage during this mobilization event, which was aimed at preventing Donald Trump, Harris's opponent, from winning. Her participation was kept a secret.
Elections in the USA: The three-day Democratic convention can change a lot
- So I’m calling on all you independents and all you undecideds. You know I’m telling you the truth that values and character matter, most of all, in leadership and in life, and more than anything — you know, this is true — that decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024 - said Oprah Winfrey.
The presenter also spoke about the history of the USA. She mentioned how great an achievement it is that in a country where racial segregation existed, a Black woman of Indian-Jamaican descent now has a significant chance at the presidency.
- I think what she means for women of the world is so extraordinary. For women here in the United States, we can’t even measure it. Because to see someone who looks like you in this role, you see what’s possible for yourself - she declared previously to the People magazine.
Oprah Winfrey also jokingly referred to remarks made by JD Vance, the candidate for vice president in Donald Trump's potential administration. He caused a stir when he called Kamala Harris "a childless cat lady."
- When a house is on fire, we don't ask about the homeowner's race or religion. We don't wonder who their partner is or how they voted. No, we just try to do the best we can to save them. And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady — well, we try to get that cat out too - said Oprah Winfrey.
