Maintaining the hygiene of your washing machine is essential, as this appliance can quickly become prone to mold or mildew. A new machine can be expensive, but you don't need costly, specialized products to take care of it. Use a few clever tricks, including eliminating bad smells, to keep your washing machine free from these issues.
How to protect your washing machine from moisture?
Many people leave the washing machine door slightly open after finishing a wash cycle. This helpful step can reduce moisture, but it is insufficient. To fully protect the washing machine, open the detergent drawer.
Why? The drawer where you add washing powder and rinse aid also comes into contact with water; over time, mold can develop there.
The washing machine door and drawer should not be left open indefinitely, as this can increase the risk of damage. Leaving them open for about 15 minutes after completing a wash cycle is sufficient. Remember to occasionally remove the drawer and thoroughly clean it of any leftover detergent residues to ensure nothing undesirable grows there.
How to remove mold from the washing machine drawer?
If you notice mold already appearing in the drawer, take immediate action. You can use products you may already have in your kitchen cabinet. You will need two clean sponges, vinegar, and water.
Mix vinegar with water in a 1:2 ratio. Soak the sponges in the prepared solution and place them in the drawer. Leave them there for 15-30 minutes, depending on the degree of dirtiness. After this time, wipe the compartments with the sponges and, finally, dry them with paper towels. Vinegar has bleaching and disinfecting properties and will easily remove the buildup.
