Upholstered furniture is an integral part of many of our homes. These are the pieces where we relax daily or spend time with family and friends. Unfortunately, heavy use causes the upholstery to become dirty quickly.

Regular upholstery cleaning is important not only for aesthetic reasons but also for hygiene. Dirt and dust mites can lead to allergies and health problems. Therefore, it's worth ensuring the use of appropriate stain-removal methods.

How to clean upholstered furniture?

One of the most popular and effective home cleaning methods for upholstery is the use of baking soda and lemon juice. Baking soda has stain-removing and deodorizing properties, making it an ideal agent for tackling most stains. Lemon juice acts as an antibacterial and refreshing agent, which further enhances cleaning effectiveness. To prepare the solution:

  • Mix 2 teaspoons of baking soda with the juice from one lemon in about half a gallon of lukewarm water.
  • Soak a soft cloth in the solution and wring it out well until it is slightly damp.
  • Gently wipe stains and dirt using circular motions.
  • After cleaning, leave the upholstery to dry.

To remove stains, you can also use toothpaste. It is particularly effective if it is white and in a non-gel form. Simply apply the paste on a soft, clean cloth and gently rub it into the furniture's surface.

Another way to remove stains from upholstery is to use shaving foam. The traditional white foam, without additional dyes and fragrances, works best. Avoid foam with added oils or other moisturizing substances that may leave greasy marks.

Before applying foam to the stain, the surface should be pre-cleaned of dust. Then, simply apply the foam directly onto the stain, gently rub it into the fabric, and leave it for a few minutes. The foam penetrates stains effectively, dissolving them and making them easier to remove. After applying the foam to the stain, use a soft brush or cloth to gently rub it into the fabric. Then, wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove any foam residue and dissolved dirt. For tougher stains, such as ink or greasy spots, the process can be repeated several times.

When is it worth using cleaners?

Although home methods for cleaning upholstery are effective, sometimes it is worth resorting to specialized cleaners, especially for difficult-to-remove stains. Commercial products are usually more concentrated and work faster, which can be crucial in emergency situations. These agents often contain antibacterial ingredients that not only remove stains but also eliminate bacteria and dust mites.

Remember that...

Before applying either homemade or store-bought remedies, it's worth testing them on an inconspicuous part of the upholstery.
