According to the BBC, the SOS signal was received at 11:30 PM Eastern Time from the 144-foot Sea Story ship, which embarked on a diving trip from a port near Marsa Alam on Saturday.
There were 31 tourists and 14 crew members on board. As the governor of Egypt's Red Sea province stated, 16 people have already been rescued.
The ship sank in an area with many sharks
Some of the survivors found in the Wadi el-Gemal area, south of Marsa Alam, were transported by planes to receive medical assistance, while others are waiting to be picked up by an Egyptian warship.
Air and sea units continue the search for the missing, he added.
The "Sea Story" ship sank near the town of Shaab Satayah, known for its beautiful coral reef, in a place where "sharks are plentiful."
